White Teeth - book adaptation by Channel 4 & WGBH on Hulu

White Teeth on Hulu

Four episodes, just under one hour each. A collaboration between Channel Four and WGBH.

A sparkling, epic comedy adapted by Simon Burke (Tom Jones) from the award-winning debut novel by Zadie Smith. White Teeth tells the story of three families living in Willesden, northwest London. Their lives, present and past, entertwine comically and explosively over three decades in the melting pot of modern Britain.

It is Channel Four content available for free in the U.S., which is unusual. Also it lacks an expiration date, and is apparently unavailable on DVD anywhere. Watch it, and thank me later.

Ronald Helfrich reviewed this show. Rating starRating starRating starRating starRating star It’s here!!!!!

White Teeth, Channel 4’s excellent adaptation of Zadie Smith’s prize winning novel, is television at its absolute best. What a pity that Channel 4 doesn’t make em like this and Tales of the City any more. And what a pity that White Teeth is not available on DVD in the UK or in the USA while tons of shows and movies that are no where near as good are. Come on Channel 4 and PBS.

Richard Walker commented on the review “It’s here!!!!!”

I wish there were more people here like you. I didn’t realize Channel 4 has changed… It’s odd that the DVDs aren’t available — but I’m sure the legal issues are enormous, being an adaptation and a Channel 4 & WGBH collaboration. It’s been available since it appeared here…. no apparent “expire” date. Curiouser and curiouser… .

Had trouble embedding 3 & 4 — but they are available at the link at top, and by browsing “more episodes” after the above finish playing.

We don't need your Businesses (meet Mr Redhill)

A friend of mine told me an amusing story about how a photographer’s lighting equipment rental facility manages difficult would-be clients.

Meet Mr. Redhill

One of the best things about working for a well-established business with an organically earned reputation is that they aren’t looking for new customers. Such businesses don’t need a Yellow Pages listing, and sometimes even ask you who referred you to them.

A specialized service such as lighting equipment rental is often subject to cold calls from self-important, ill-behaved people who expect that name-dropping over the phone will get them special treatment. Should Miss Liebowitz’s assistant phone without a referral, and attempt to throw his weight around, he’ll likely be referred to Mr. Redhill.

Mr. Redhill is frequently out of the office, but he is the only person that can handle difficult would-be clients, and it’s important that they keep trying his number. When Mr. Redhill rings everyone at the shop chuckles.

Green Wing - Channel 4 (and Hulu)

I just finished season 2 of this delightful, and very naughty show.

Must-see TV, mature audiences only, about a hospital in the U.K. and its very eccentric employees.

As I said in my review:

this is why we can’t have nice things

Actually I’ve no idea why Channel 4 broadcast television in the U.K. is so much nicer than anything in the U.S. - except perhaps expensive cable channels like HBO.

Remember, this programming is available over the air, lucky bastards.

I’m making an execption to my rule against posting things that are geographically limited or subject to removal - like Hulu content is. Since this is Channel 4 programming, it’s easily available in the U.K., Canada, and Ireland. What’s unusual is to get any “free” Channel 4 content in the U.S. at all.

Following the embed for Hulu is a static image (linked to Channel 4 show site) which shows recent changes to the Hulu video controls. They’ve added a new control bar which lets you navigate within a show or series, independent of your queue contents.
