Unreleased Film -- The Savant (not done yet, 2009)

  1. The lack of information online about this film is quite deliberate. This is all there is for now, at the express direction of Robert Elvin.
  2. There is more script and another edit being planned — it’s in the “vague rumor” stage. Word has it The Savant will be feature length after this.
  3. A trailer for the film will be available soon

Unreleased Film: The Savant Screens Sunday October 26th (2008)

At 7:30 P.M. at the Art Institute on Chestnut.
Free admission. Don’t miss it!
Robert will be hauling a high-def
projector there for your viewing pleasure.

We will be drinking at a nearby North Beach watering hole afterward.
Cast party will be held November 2 at some “maritime club” or other.

Unreleased Film: The Savant (2008)

Our editor Terry Studanski died suddenly this year while working on the project. The film will carry a dedication to his memory. His family and associates assisted with the recovery of the work in progress, and Potrero Post signed on and will soon wrap up the post production. A screening has been tentatively scheduled.

Robert Elvin -- Biography

Robert Elvin is a native of Minnesota.  

His early years in the upper Midwest were spent working as a professional woodwind player.  He was the principal clarinetist with the University of Minnesota Orchestra and also appeared with the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra and the MacPhail Wind Ensemble. In addition, he worked in the pit orchestras of stage shows and traveled extensively with Jazz and show bands throughout the United States.  

After moving to San Francisco he became involved in the visual arts and worked as a commercial photographer and teacher of lighting for both still imagery and motion pictures.  

Robert believes that blending the direct involvement of a well educated director with the organic quality inherent in smaller unit productions is the key to strong narrative. He is also interested in film theory and exploring the concept of the film as short story in his work. The Savant is his first film, and is based on these ideas.  

Mr. Elvin holds degrees from the University of Minnesota in social anthropology and the San Francisco Art Institute in photography.

This is another piece that was put together for Robert Elvin’s film. This time, I received the clarinet and bass parts recorded previously. I then added a piano part, recorded it and mixed the audio together.

Collaborative Improvisational Composition: Etude for Clarinet and Piano

This piece of music has a very unusual genesis. So unusual, I’m calling it “collaborative improvisational composition.” My collaborator was a bit less than “composer,” and I bit more than “arranger.” Also, what a lovely feature of this method - that no-one is ever faced with the Blank Page Terrors.

Robert Elvin was (and still is) making an independent film, and had improvised some music on his clarinet, for use in the film. (Robert used to play winds professionally; he was rusty, but not very!)

I listened to it and was able to easily deduce things like meter and key signature.

I then created a score for the solo clarinet part. That was a fair bit of work, mostly because of the fast runs and other unusual figures.

I composed (arranged?) a piano part after seeing the music on paper… and then performed and recorded the piano part (in a sub-optimal acoustic space) and mixed the audio together.

Finally, we got the score in decent shape, suitable for other uses, such as a chamber music performance. Don’t tell anyone there is no Lone Tortured Genius Composer for this piece!

Please share away, Robert and I agreed to make everying Creative Commons licensed. We would like to hear the piece interpreted and performed by others; Robert is curious how the”improv vs. sheet music” issue will play out for the clarinetist.
